Times are changing! Crazy weather changes, more and more weather related catastrophies - I personally am not looking forward to tornado season this year. Living in Texas, we see plenty of crazy weather normally, but the last 2-3 years have brought record snowfall (12 inches on more than one ocassion in North Texas is practically a blizzard in our eyes - LOL. We have NO snowplows.) The tornadoes across the south left horrible devastation last year. Earthquakes are becoming more and more common. And Japan? They can not get a break. My heart bleeds for those people.

Pastor Richard Lee at First Baptist Mckinney has been preaching on "The End of Times as We Know It" for the month of January. While he is not going chapter to chapter explaining all of the different judgements in the book of Revelation, he is bringing a fresh perspective to the information and teaching this book offers us. If you go to the tab for Media and sign up to have a log in (they will not chase you down), you can view sermon only teachings for the last few weeks. The overview begins on 1/8. I hope you'll watch!

And, remember - the Book of Revelation carries a blessing to any who read it. Can't we all use a blessing?

Courageous - The Movie

I've been debating for a couple of days over what to write on the blog, and after watching this movie tonight on dvd, I decided I would share my opinion of it with you.

I am the Christian mother of 3. And I'll be the first one to admit - the world we live in is a harder place for Christians than it was when I was a child. Todays kids are faced with so many challenges - broken homes, mothers forced to work out of necessity, fathers either missing or working fast-paced, demanding jobs that require so many hours . . . and then, of course, there's the drugs, the alcohol, the unprotected sex . . . and it just goes on and on. The world we live in has become a place where so much is accepted that shouldn't be. Ever.

Courageous is a wonderful movie about a group of Christian men who decide to draft a resolution to be godly husbands and fathers. To take total responsibility for their wives and children's lives and spiritual growth. You will laugh and cry through their defeats and victories. It is most definitely a film I would recommend every family watch. You won't be sorry!

What is heirloom sewing?

What is considered "true" heirloom sewing?

Heirloom sewing is a collection of sewing techniques seamstresses used up into the 1920's. If you've heard the terms "rolled hem", "entredeux", "french lace", "swiss embroidery", "whitework", etc., you've heard descriptions of heirloom sewing. Sewing, at that time, was done by hand. Garments, linens, etc., were created from natural fabrics (cottons, lawns, linens, silks, etc. - there were no synthetic fibers) and embellished with different types of embroidery. Hand-smocking was very popular in clothing, especially childrenswear.

Today, heirloom style garments may be created with techniquess used on sewing machines, to recreate the same look. For your item to be considered truly "heirloom", it should be created from all natural fabrics. For storage, use acid-free tissue paper, in a breathable container or chest. Some individuals also wrap their items in cotton sheets.

The Christening Ceremony

Since I was already researching the history behind the christening gown, I thought it might be interesting to research the christening ceremony. I was not familiar with the background, since I'm a Baptist - cough.

The christening/baptism ceremony was mandated by the Catholic church in 416, and the edict was written that all babies that died before being baptised would enter limbo. (This was later lifted in 2007 when the Pope proclaimed that all babies and children went to heaven, baptized or not.)

The baptism ceremony removes sins and unites the child as a child of God and a member of the Catholic church. The parents and godparents take a part in the ritual - the godparents promise to see after the child's religous training, and his/her progress through life.

The white christening gown is a sign of Christian dignity and purity, the oil placed on the head and chest in the sign of the cross is the Holy Spirit, and the lit candle is symbolic of the light of Christ, which we are all asked to keep lit.

Just exactly when did babies start wearing the christening gowns we see today?

Up until the 20th century, babies and toddlers - both boys and girls - wore dresses. Around the mid 1700's, the long christening robes, and dresses, were used during christening and baptisms. (Before that, babies were kept tightly swaddled - even for the christening ceremonies.)

Expectant mothers would create the family christening gowns before the first baby was born - created by hand with pintucks, pleats, french and swiss laces - showing detailed workmanship. The fabrics, laces and embroidery flosses were white - symbolic of new life, purity and joy. These works of art were carefully stored after babies baptism and used for each new child, carried down through generations of babies. I had the opportunity to design a christening gown for a mother whose family actually had a gown created hundreds of years ago - stored in a family vault!

Todays gowns come in all styles - mass-manufactured and sold in stores, and also handmade by seamstresses and sold individually.

Yesterday, we celebrated the most Holy Day of the year - and recognized the resurrection of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Apparently, 11 year old boys have a funny way of celebrating.

Most of you have heard of the new rage - microwaving Peeps. So, I turn around and notice that my son AND HIS FATHER are standing in the kitchen in front of the microwave, and when I turn to see what they're doing, I find that they are nuking an innocent marshmallow chick.

Interestingly enough, the little chick does swell to an alarming size before it implodes.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter. And guard your microwaves.

Just another quirkey day with Izzie. This dog seldom sits in a "normal" doggie manner. She is either sitting "side saddle" like she is in this picture, or laying flat out with her back legs folded out backwards. We call it her turkey leg position. Snicker. If she's sitting on the stairs, she sits with her fanny on one stair and her legs positioned on the next below.

I like quirkey. Darned good thing!

Fabric Hoarding 101

Okay. I admit it. I have a problem. A Big problem. I love fabric. No, I mean I REALLY LOVE FABRIC!

I have bolts and bolts of fabric, besides the nice, flat cuts I have stored in my pull-out Ikea bins. Sigh.

Some of it was purchased for Market and never used . . . some for bazaars that was either never used, or is leftover on the bolt . . . and some awesome lengths from Kay Fabrics when they went out last year. (Major drool).

So, I decided to list some of it on Etsy so that other fabric lovers could have a chance at it at a reduced rate. I mean, let's face it - good fabric is not cheap.

And believe it or not, you CAN'T take it with you. Although I hold onto the hope that my job in Heaven will have something to do with sewing.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to make this little heirloom daygown for a client for Easter! I just LOVE heirloom sewing, with it's fine Swiss cotton fabrics, ecru lace edgings, beadings, entredeux . . .

This daygown was made for a little boy . . . so I used french lace with a tiny dot pattern, and featherstitched between the pintucks at the bodice . . .

I love using beading at the wrists so that the sleeves can be pulled up with silk satin ribbons to stay up on the arms . . .

Izzie the Bird Dog - Or So She Thinks!

Before you start quaking in your shoes at the ferocious dog pictured, remember that this dog is horrified of EVERYTHING. If you come to my door, she will try to bite or nip, but mainly in the name of self-preservation. I thought she was trying to protect me. Turns out, she's worried about HERSELF. And, along with being crazy, she's is extremely paranoid. AND, an Affenpinscher. Enough said?

Yesterday was an exciting day in the Harkins household. I left the patio door slightly open, so that Miss I'm-Afraid-To-Be-Outside-By-Myself-Without-The-Door-Open could get in from her potty break. That was a mistake.

Because, it seems Izzie's Mockingbird decided to fly in for a play date. GREAT. Let's just say after bird and dog flying back and forth across the downstairs, I managed to coax it onto the end of a broom and usher it outstairs.

I have witnesses. LOL! Have a great day!

This was LAST week. Gase was .12 higher today when I filled up my mini van - $55.25. And I didn't exactly top it off as I have been asked to do "cough".

I've been reading a book titled, Can America Survive? by John Hagee. In it he writes about the economic state of our country, and outlines the signs of the end of times. This a Christian book written by a well-known pastor. And, an good read!

Yes, believe it or not, it snowed in North Texas this weekend. Around 5 inches at our house . . . this is so NOT normal, although the area kids loved it.

WOW! It's 2010 already! How long before I get used to writing that date on documents? LOL!

I apologize for my lengthy absence. I caught the flu about a week before Christmas. I must say, that was not great timing. Our preschool class had projects to finish and a party that Thursday - but I managed to stay part of two days to see it through. I really hate missing their parties. The kids had a blast!

Ready for spring? I am! It snowed THREE TIMES in North Texas over a space of two weeks. Anything over 1/4 inch is considered a major event here - 2 to 3 inches might as well be a blizzard. Everything comes to a stand still. And if you're brave enough to drive on ice around here - watch out for the other drivers. We are not ice savvy around here. LOL.

Anyway, I am working on some awesome little outfits for spring - and Easter dresses. My absolute favorite shopping season! Such cute little outfits for kids . . . sigh.

The night of the Saviour's birth, all the living creatures, both flora and fauna, came to Bethlehem with gifts. The olive tree brought its fruit and the palm its dates. But the little fir tree had no gift and was so tired it couldn't resist when the big trees pushed it into the background and hid it from view. But then a nearby angel took pity and commanded a cluster of stars to come and rest on its delicate boughs. When the Baby Jesus beheld this lovely lighted tree, He smiled and blessed it, declaring henceforth that fir trees should always be filled with lights at Christmastime to please little children.

A Series of Unfortunate Events - Poor Kim

You Gotta Love Preschool.

Kim and I teach middle 3's preschool in Allen, Texas at our Baptist church. Let's just say, that some days are more "interesting" than others. And, if I leave Kim alone for more than 5 minutes, something is bound to happen.

This morning, I left during Chapel to get some work done. It probably wasn't but a few minutes before I left, that one of our little guys HAD to go potty. Never mind that we'd both asked him before we left the room, but you know how it goes.

Kim and another teacher, in a similar predicament, head toward the bathrooms. The women't bathroom (our first choice), has been freshly mopped, and I have yet to meet a toddler who doesn't immediately crash to the ground when his/her feet meet mopped tile. So, they move onto the Family bathroom - one toilet. Okay, that's great for ONE kid crossing their legs . . . so Kim moves onto the Men's bathroom, stands just inside while the little one relieves himself . . . and the pastor comes trotting through the door, looks dumbfounded, and leaves. Evidently, HE thought the Family restroom was a good second choice - nope. Returns to the Men's room and states - "There is ANOTHER girl in the other bathroom," and leaves.

During lunch, we realize one of the kids doesn't have a lunch. Kim takes off in an effort to find food, and shows up 15 minutes later after being sent 3 different directions, finally securing a barbeque sandwich for said child from the senior luncheon. Helps me secure the sides of my fold up box (okay, so I can sew a $500 christening gown - no problem, but I can't figure out this cardboard box - tab A goes into tab B. Great.)

I come back from lunch, later, and Kim is holding a pair of drenched blue jeans belonging to one of the kids - you've got it - didn't "quite make it." Visualize her holding them an arms length away, wearing plastic gloves. hanging over the door looking for me. You've got it.

Now, don't get me wrong - Kim and I really enjoy our jobs - no mistake. We LOVE these kids. But, there are definitely days when we go crawling home to enjoy a well deserved nap.

Redeemed Unique Art

At my last holiday bazaar, I met a vendor who, I believe, just started out this last year. She offers a unique selection of art - created from vintage pieces, etc., and recreated into new art. Noel Giger is a wonderful, genuine Christian woman, who lives in the metroplex and attends local shows. Keep an eye out for her work!

I have her blogspot listed under my favorites - be sure to stop in regularly. She shares interesting information on the origins of some Christmas traditions, and on simple Christmas projects to use in your home!

Ready for Cyber Monday?

Now that Black Friday is past (and yes, I DID stop by more stores than I had said I would - LOL), the next big business day will be for online businesses. Cyber Monday - everyone is pooped out from running to all of the department stores to catch those unbelieveable bargains . . . and ready to finish up from the comfort of their homes.

Trust me - there are plently of good deals online, as well. Which is great for those of us who have yucky weather rolling in this week. Some websites even offer low shipping rates to help out shoppers this season. And, the more you can purchase and have shipped reasonably . . . the better your savings!

Black Friday Anyone?

Here it comes! The busiest shopping day of the year . . . but, you won't see me out a 3am this year - yawn. I really don't even care to be awake when the sun is coming up - LOL. I have more of a tendancy to stay up late, watch movies such as Pride and Prejudice, The Day After Tomorrow, Men and Black, etc and sew. Or, take the ocassional break to play Bejeweled on Facebook - LOL.

No, this year I will make only two trips on Black Friday - one to JoAnn's to pick up an organizational rack, and the other to a local quilt fabric store that offers 40% of one cut of fabric that day. (We all have our weaknesses - right?)

Unfortunately, this change in shopping habits means that my babies are older and are either very specific about what they want, or ask for the very personal gift of money. LOL.

Have fun while you shop - and be sure to eat something chocolate for me while you're out!

I just can't believe it! I just a little over a week, the shopping rush begins!

I don't know about you, but it really crept up on me this year.

Fortunately, the older kids want to pick their own things after Christmas with gift cards or cash, so the only one we really shop for is the youngest of our brood.

I'm happy to announce that I will be offering items at bazaars in the DFW area this fall! I will actually be represented at the District-Wide Bazaar for McKinney ISD at Evans Middle School on Eldorado Parkway on November 7th from 9-5, since I will be at the Snowflake Bazaar at Plano West High School in Plano on the 7th and 8th. In McKinney, the booth will feature mainly embellished jean jackets and jeans, pettiskirts and some accessories. I will have some of the same at the Snowflake Bazaar, along with booties, shoes, tights, baby layette, etc., from the website. And yes, we do accept orders!

In December we will be at the Holiday Bazaar at Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church on State HIghway 121, Allen, Texas on the 9th and 10th, from 9-2, and from 6-9pm on the evening of the 9th.

Advertising, Anyone?

This is probably one of the biggest expenses of owning any online or brick and mortar store. However, there are a few ways you can advertise inexpensively.

While some website owners have great luck with pay per click, I reaped very little in using this form of advertising - no matter how big of a budget I set. Affiliate programs can be very lucrative, as long as you are are careful of the types of ads you allow on your website. And while SEO companies promise a lot, there is only so much they can do for you - and it can be VERY costly.

Here are some thoughts on inexpensive ways to advertise within your own community:

Send flyers to the local schools. Check with the administration first - sometimes they will send home advertisements with the students if you include a discount coupon. I know that the schools around me will place flyers on the table in the teacher's lounge. Do this around the holiday season!

Offer to help the schools out with a fund raiser!

Contact the Chamber of Commerce. They allow guest speakers on different subjects - make yourself know to the community.

Offering items for newborns? Contact some of the local OB/GYN offices. Some send sample products, etc., home with their new mothers. Add something small and inexpensive that advertises your products!

Having your website optimized is actually one of the best things you can do - make sure that all of the elements of your site are set up correctly - check out the WAHM websites offering these services. I am a huge proponent of hiring others working from their homes - they have the same skills as some of the larger companies offering the same services - for a much more reasonable fee, since they have less overhead. Check references and look at their client's websites to see how well things are "working".

Starting an Online Children's Boutique

Preparing to open an online children's boutique? Want to jump in with both feet?

STOP!

Learn from my experiences over the last two years.

I, too, LOVE baby and children's clothing. I love buying it, designing it, sewing it . . . and jumped in with both feet. Unfortunately, I did not do a great deal of research before buying merchandise and opening my online store. PLEASE - before you start - before you fill out that Sales and Use Permit application, buy merchandise, etc. - research, research, research! You will soon find out that what you THOUGHT everyone was looking for was a figment of your imagination - trust me on this one.

Especially in a challenging economy, people's needs change. What was popular this time last year is old news. Talk to anyone you can find related to your field - reps, merchants (okay, so they won't ALL want to talk to you - after all you are the competition), wholesalers - get a good feel of what is actually selling - not what you think is cute. One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that not everyone likes what I like. Some people had bad taste and will ALWAYS have bad taste. Even though they think I'm the one with bad taste - LOL.

Check into dropshipping - it will save you from having to carry as much inventory - which will save you at tax time. Coming from Cindy, who had you-wouldn't-believe-how-much inventory at the end of the first year.

When buying wholesale, don't be afraid to buy only limited amounts. Just make sure you can reorder when and if you should run out of a style. You never know what is going to be the hot item in your store.

And, make sure you have a wide range of items. Don't just carry the high dollar items - carry lower dollar accessories and coordinates to fill out your store.

Great Sewing Classes in the Dallas Area

Just a note of interest - even though I've been sewing for years and years, I've begun attending group classes at a local fabric store. Linda Clifford offers these classes on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings in the back room of Kay Fabrics in Richardson. With many years of sewing experience, she offers a wealth of information on any subject - alterations, garment construction, tailoring, you name it! As a professional seamstress, she designs bridal gowns, takes custom orders for all types of clothing, and provides alteration services.

The group classes meet from 10-11:30 am on Tuesday mornings, and from 7-8:30 pm on Thursday evenings. Private lessons are available upon request.

Kay Fabrics is located on Arapaho, just West of I75 in Richardson. This store offers fabrics, trims, etc., available nowhere else in the area.

Sizing in Children's Clothing

Unfortunately, as many of us found out the hard way with our own children, there is no real "standardized" sizing for children's clothing or our own. Each manufacturer researches sizing, and determines sizing dimensions for their product lines. Their mannequins are created accordingly, and the next season's line is created.

While you can find numerous sizing charts online, using the designer's finished measurement chart is the best choice, if available.
